Taijiquan is the quintessence of China and a wonderful flower in the martial
garden. At the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, Chen
Wangting, the ninth emperor of Chen family in Chenjiagou, Wenxian County, Henan
Province, created Taijiquan on the basis of family boxing, according to the principle
of Yin and Yang of Taiji, drawing on the knowledge of other martial arts, integrating
traditional Chinese medicine meridian theory and guiding vomiting technique into
one. For more than 300 years, Tai chi has been a secret of the Chen family in a corner
of Chenjiagou, developed into Chen, Yang, Wu, He, Wu, Sun and many other schools,
spread over 150 countries and regions, hundreds of millions of practitioners, becoming
the most popular fi tness activity in the 21st century. In 2006, Tai Chi was included in
the fi rst batch of China’s national intangible cultural heritage list. In December 2020,
Taijiquan was included in the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of
mankind. Taijiquan, which originated in Chenjiagou, has become the common wealth
of all mankind.
